Canary wood
Description
Description:
Canary wood is a durable South American hardwood known for its distinctive range of colors, from pale yellow-orange to darker reddish brown, often with darker streaks throughout. It comes from several species in the Centrolobium genus and is found from Panama south to Brazil. The heartwood is sharply separated from the pale yellow sapwood, and its color tends to darken and become more uniform with age. Canary wood typically has a straight grain, though some pieces can have irregular or wild grain, with a fine to medium texture and good natural luster.
Workability:
Canary wood is generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Pieces with irregular or wild grain may experience some tea rout during planning, but the wood has good dimensional stability overall. It turns, glues, and finishes well, making it suitable for a wide range of woodworking applications.
Common uses:
Canarywood is commonly used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, decorative veneers, boatbuilding, construction lumber, railroad crossties, and turned items. Its distinctive coloration and good acoustic properties also make it suitable for specialty projects such as speaker enclosures and entertainment system cabinets.
